Memorial Day, Sacrifice, and the Power of the Pullback

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend. It is a sacred reminder.

A reminder that freedom was purchased by men and women who chose service over comfort, sacrifice over ease, and purpose over self.

Today, I found myself reflecting on my grandfather, who served in World War II during the Battle of the Bulge under General Patton. During my first year at Brigham Young University, I had the opportunity to live with my grandparents and truly get to know him. Looking back now, I realize what a gift that was.

The quiet strength.
The discipline.
The humility.
The willingness to endure hardship for something greater than himself.

Those are SlingShot Principles.

The SlingShot Family understands something that most people struggle to accept:

Great launches require difficult pullbacks.

Whether it is military service, business, parenting, faith, athletics, medicine, or personal growth — preparation is rarely glamorous. The waiting season can feel slow. Sometimes painful. Sometimes unfair.

But the pullback is not punishment.

It is preparation.

The individuals we honor on Memorial Day understood sacrifice at the highest level. Their willingness to endure difficulty created freedoms that many of us now take for granted. Their example should remind us that meaningful outcomes almost always require patience, discipline, and perseverance.

So this week, slow down for a moment.

Reflect.

Be grateful.

And remember that if your life currently feels like a season of tension, resistance, or preparation, you may simply be in the pullback phase before an incredible launch.

Stay patient.
Stay disciplined.
Stay aligned.

The launch always comes to those willing to endure the process.

“Freedom is never free. Neither is greatness. Both are earned through sacrifice, patience, and the willingness to endure the pullback before the launch.”
